10 Worst Things Arizona’s Racist Sheriff Joe Arpaio Has Done

political-linguaphile:

  1. Forcing Women To Sleep In Their Own Menstrual Blood: In Arpaio’s jails, “female Latino LEP prisoners have been denied basic sanitary items. In some instances, female Latino LEP prisoners have been forced to remain with sheets or pants soiled from menstruation because of MCSO’s failure to ensure that detention officers provide language assistance in such circumstances.”
  2. Assaulting Pregnant Women: “[A]n MCSO officer stopped a Latina woman – a citizen of the United States and five months pregnant at the time – as she pulled into her driveway. After she exited her car, the officer then insisted that she sit on the hood of the car. When she refused, the officer grabbed her arms, pulled them behind her back, and slammed her, stomach first, into the vehicle three times. He then dragged her to the patrol car and shoved her into the backseat. He left her in the patrol car for approximately 30 minutes without air conditioning. The MCSO officer ultimately issued a citation for failure to provide identification.”
  3. Stalking Latino Women: “In another instance, during a crime suppression operation, two MCSO officers followed a Latina woman, a citizen of the United States, for a quarter of a mile to her home. The officers did not turn on their emergency lights, but insisted that the woman remain in her car when she attempted to exit the car and enter her home. The officers’ stated reasons for approaching the woman was a non-functioning license plate light. When the woman attempted to enter her home, the officers used force to take her to the ground, kneed her in the back, and handcuffed her. The woman was then taken to an MCSO substation, cited for ‘disorderly conduct,’ and returned home. The disorderly conduct citation was subsequently dismissed.”
  4. Criminalizing Being A Latino: “During raids, [Arpaio’s Criminal Enforcement Squad] typically seizes all Latinos present, whether they are listed on the warrant or not. For example, in one raid CES had a search warrant for 67 people, yet 109 people were detained. Fifty-nine people were arrested and 50 held for several hours before they were released. Those detained, but not on the warrant, were seized because they were Latino and present at the time of the raid. No legal justification existed for their detention.”
  5. 6. Ignoring Rape: Because of Arpaio’s obsessive focus on “low-level immigration offenses” his officers failed “to adequately respond to reports of sexual violence, including allegations of rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse of girls.” (note* I skipped #5 because ignoring rape is much more gross to me than their listed #5)

And that’s just a few of the many inhumane and disgusting crimes Joe Arpaio has committed against immigrants, and in some cases,  U.S. citizens. Click here to read about his widespread use of racial slurs, racial profiling, random and unlawful detention of Latinos, among other atrocities Sheriff Joe Arpaio is responsible for.

According to a new report from the Pew Hispanic Center, net migration from Mexico is now zero. In fact, the report suggests that more Mexican-born people may now be leaving the US than arriving. This means the end of the largest and most sustained immigration trend in American history.
The co-author of the report and senior demographer with the Pew Hispanic Center, Jeff Passel, says the reasons include the economic downturn in the United States; the comparative prosperity of Mexico; tougher border controls; increased deportation of undocumented immigrants. More.

Undocumented students risk deportation to protest Rubio
At an event with tea party favorite Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) on Friday, activists supporting the idea that undocumented students should be given a path to citizenship were booed and threatened with arrest.
“They were threatened with arrest, which for a young DREAM Act student means automatic deportation,” Presente Action co-founder Roberto Lovato told Raw Story.
The group had used Rubio’s appearance at the conservative Hispanic Leadership Network Conference to launch their “No Somos Rubios” campaign and to point out that the senator opposes the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act while supporting Arizona’s SB 1070 anti-immigrant law.
“On my way in today, I got a text from a friend that said someone is flying a plane over the building with a banner that says, ‘Marco, no somos Rubios,’ which means, ‘Marco, we’re not blond,’” Rubio joked. “Which by coincidence, neither am I.”
Just as he was getting warmed up, protesters supporting the DREAM Act interrupted the speech. The conservative crowd immediately responded with boos.
“These young people are very brave to be here today,” Rubio, a Cuban American, told the crowd as the protesters were being escorted from the room. “They raise a very legitimate issue. And if they would give me the courtesy of finishing my speech where I’m going to speak about this then I ask that you guys let them stay.”
But Lovato told Raw Story that Rubio’s words were just “political theater.”
“See, this is where you see the the two faces of Marco Rubio,” Lovato said. “Rubio was talking loudly about his dreamy DREAM Act and his immigration story. Meanwhile, his security was quietly telling them that they were going to be arrested if they didn’t get out now.”
“You look at his record and it’s undeniable: He supports the racist SB 1070 there in Arizona, he is against comprehensive immigration reform, he is against the DREAM Act.
Lovato noted that the “No Somos Rubios” campaign was indeed a play on words. It means, “We are not Rubios,” but Rubio in Spanish also means “blond.”
“Who is backing Marco Rubio? It’s not a bunch of Latinos from the Southwestern United States,” he explained. “It’s the tea party, which is 88 percent white, only 4 percent Latino.”

Illegal as a noun

sinidentidades:

Illegal being turned into a noun is by far the most ruthlessly effective way to dehumanize and demonize an entire group of people, which is why it is propagated by mass media and politicians to vilify these people as outsiders and aggressors of the state to justify the systematic abuse and exploitation these people are faced with on a daily basis.

Climate change and population migration

climateadaptation:

When human populations can no longer live on their land, they move, migrating to better places. Sea level rise, higher temperatures, disruption of water cycles, and increasing severity of storms are climate change impacts that will force millions of people to move from their homes.

Most populations will migrate slowly, but in the case of catastrophic events coupled with the inability to adapt, mass migration will occur. Think, New Orleans vs Somalia, where New Orleans is arguably more able to adapt to catastophic weather events than Somalia, which is dealing with millions of people migrating north and west due to climate drought. This shows there are two general types of migration - very slow, and very fast. It’s not a smooth gradient pattern where people slowly and eventually move from place to place, like Americans or Europeans do. No, rather this slow/fast pace is lumpy and jagged, and occurs in unexpected spurts at the extremes.

But what of their destinations? Are countries prepared for these sporadic influxes? In other words, what about the countries that receive these migrants? Are they prepared? A new white paper, Climate Change and Migration Dynamics, funded by the European Union and published by Migration Policy, concludes that international cooperation is needed in order to respond to mass displacements that could occur from climate changes, even in the short-term.

The paper looks at it from the point of view of countries, not from the point of view of the people. From that point of view, the authors take a look at policies that would or would not allow mass migrations within the above context of extremes. The authors split countries policies into two general categories, an obstructive approach and a constructive approach.

Obstructive policies are just that - they purposefully obstruct massive amounts of people from immigrating into their political boundaries. The United States, though relatively generous, would be in this category.

Constructive countries help people maintain their livelihoods in the face of climate change. These countries accommodate climate migrants movements as necessary. New Zealand has a limited climate migration policy, allowing up to 12,000 people from the island nation of Tuvalu to migrate in case complete inundation of the islands by sea level rise. (Note: I didn’t find a country that has very accommodating migration policies, if you know of one, please contact me).

The paper is a short read - just about 10 pages. I recommend it to my adaptation readers as an excellent source of information for international issues of immigration and human responses to climate impacts.
